Since the City’s incorporation in 1996, the City has been very supportive of providing transportation alternatives to all types of users. The City has been applying Complete Street principles since its beginning. In addition to the extensive City’s bicycle network on arterial and collector streets nearly all local streets have either sidewalk on both sides or shared used path on one side of the roadway.  The current City’s Bicycle Master Plan dates to 2013, and with the assistance of several funding sources many of these proposed listed improvements have either been constructed, listed in the FDOT work plan, or been awarded for programming.

As part of the City’s ongoing efforts to continue prioritizing and recommending best practices, we are having national experts from Toole Design, one of the nation's leading engineering firms specializing in multimodal infrastructure planning and design, providing guidance on how to continue making the City of Weston one of the premiere bicycling cities in the nation.

Emerald Estates Drive Corridor: the study corridor runs from the signalized intersection at Weston Rd. to 200 feet east of the Emerald Estates Community guard house. A few pedestrian studies have been completed along the corridor to improve pedestrian safety and aggressive driver behavior. The recommendations of the last pedestrian study that was completed in 2019 were to evaluate the feasibility of the installation of traffic calming treatments, such as, a raised intersection with textured pavement, lane width narrowing strategies, a traffic circle potentially at the intersection of Emerald Estates Dr. and The Palms at Weston access driveway along with other treatments to benefit the residents within this area.

Southwest Weston Quadrant Traffic Study (encompassing South Post Road, Manatee Isles Drive, Vista Park Drive and Bonaventure Boulevard). The City is committed to study the existing and proposed traffic operations along the main corridor segments within the SW quadrant of the City. This includes potential intersection improvements (3-leg roundabout or a traffic signal) at the  3-leg stop-controlled intersection of SW 36th Street and South Post Road to improve the traffic operations. This SW quadrant traffic study will take into consideration the recent closure at SW 36th Street and US Highway 27.

2023 Bicycle Master Plan Update

In 2013. the City of Weston completed a Bicycle Master Plan focusing on tenets from the League of American Bicyclists, at the time the nation’s premier bicycling education and advocacy organization. The League of American Bicyclists focuses on what they consider the five E’s of a bicycle friendly community. The “five E’s” are engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement, and evaluation. This plan evaluated how the City is currently managing the five E’s and identify where there is room for improvement in the City’s quest to be designated a Bicycle Friendly Community.

It has been ten years, and the City has made great strides in completing or having secured transportation grant funding that addresses projects identified in the 2013 Bicycle Master Plan. Additionally, since it has been ten years, a Master Plan Update is due and we want your input!
