Assistant Public Works Director Represents Fort Lauderdale in Trenchless Technology Webcast

59

The editors of Trenchless Technology hosted a webinar on Thursday, July 28 featuring Omar Castellon, the City of Fort Lauderdale’s Assistant Director of Public Works, as a panelist. Omar joined representatives from Dominion Energy and Metro Vancouver to share their expertise with the use of trenchless technologies when installing new underground infrastructure.

The City's new sewer force main was installed using horizontal directional drilling. This trenchless method is more efficient than traditional open-cut construction and results in less disruption to roads and traffic. Due to its many benefits, horizontal directional drilling is also being used for the undergrounding of Comcast, AT&T, and FPL utilities throughout the Las Olas Isles neighborhood to enhance safety and resilience for our neighbors.

Omar described lessons learned during these projects and offered advice to other agencies looking to do similar work. One of the key takeaways from his comments is the importance of communication with neighbors throughout construction and how critical that is to the success of a project. In fact, “The residents are the most important part of the project,” said Omar Castellon, adding that robust communication leads to improved relationships with neighbors.

A very special thank you to Omar for helping to showcase how the City is continuously seeking efficient and innovative methods to accomplish projects and keep Fort Lauderdale thriving.
