NSU Women Earn Second, Men Take Third in Final SSC Mayors’ Cup Standings

SSC all-sports trophies were first presented following the 1986-87 academic year

On the heels of one of the most notable years in recent memory, Nova Southeastern athletics has capped off 2021-22 on a high note, as its women's programs finished a collective second and its men's programs third in the final Sunshine State Conference Mayors' Cup standings, announced Monday.

On the women's side, the runner-up finish marks the second straight for the Sharks, while the Top-3 finish for the NSU men is also the second in a row.

First presented following the 1986-87 academic year, the SSC's all-sports trophies earned their names from the Mayors of member school communities who initially sponsored the award.

Mayors' Cup scoring is based on the regular-season finish for sports with conference standings and championship finish for cross country, golf, rowing, and swimming. For sports where all schools compete, scoring begins with 11 points awarded for finishing first to one point for 11th. In sports where fewer than 11 teams compete, first-place points are awarded based on the number of competing teams. Scoring takes into account ties in the SSC standings. Ties broken with a head-to-head tiebreaker are seen as Mayors' Cup points were distributed accordingly. Points were split when head-to-head results could not break a tie.

The NSU women took home the top point distributions in both softball and women's swimming after collecting a pair of SSC titles, while claiming second in women's tennis and volleyball. Men's basketball garnered the Sharks' all 11 points in the men's division following its second SSC crown, with men's swimming tallying six for its runner-up finish at the SSC Championships this past February.

Tampa received the SSC Mayors' Cup all-sports trophy in the women's division. Florida Southern, meanwhile, led the way in the men's division.
