Nova Southeastern University recently issued the following announcement.
Doubles team of Natalie Espinal and Chantal Nosievici currently No. 2 in the nation
Following a notable fall season, the Nova Southeastern tennis team has certainly garnered the attention of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), as two individuals and two doubles teams landed near the top of the most recent Division II national rankings.
Most notably, the doubles team of Natalie Espinal and Chantal Nosievici has earned the nod at No. 2 in DII, while the doubles pair of Nika Kozar and Zala Dovnik made its way into the national poll at No. 9. Additionally, Espinal was individually slotted at No. 9, with Kozar landing at No. 11.
"It's great to see so many Sharks ranked so high coming out of the toughest region in the country," expressed NSU head coach Doug Neagle. "These particular ladies have earned these accolades, but every single player on this team has played a role. We have big, team goals this year and talk a lot about elevating your teammates. If we keep doing that, this group could have a special year. There's no way around the hard work, though."
NSU's success proved inevitable in just a handful of tournaments throughout the fall. In the very first event of the year, Espinal/Nosievici and Kozar/Dovnik made up an all-NSU doubles final at the ITA South Regional Championships, with Espinal and Nosievici prevailing by the slimmest of margins, 8-7. During the same tourney, Kozar also played her way to the singles final.
Two weeks later, Espinal captured the singles championship at Rollins' C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational, while Kozar and Dovnik advanced all the way to the doubles final before making a run to the semifinals in doubles at the ITA Cup in mid-October.
Regionally, Espinal/Nosievici own the top spot in doubles as Kozar/Dovnik rank fourth. Espinal and Kozar rank also rank as the No. 2 and No. 3 players in singles in the South Region.
Beginning Jan. 15, NSU will play a trio of tune-up scrimmages before opening their 2022 spring season on Feb. at Embry-Riddle. To stay up with the Sharks, visit NSUSharks.com or follow the them on Instagram and Twitter at @NSU_WTennis.
