Lawrence Locks Up First Career SSC Offensive Player of the Week Award

1

Nova Southeastern University Athletics issued the following announcement on Sept. 20.

NSU forward tallied game-winning goal in the 87th minute against Barry last Tuesday

After tallying the game-winning goal in the 87th minute of Nova Southeastern's 2-1, come-from-behind victory over Sunshine State Conference rival Barry last Tuesday, forward Michael Lawrence has been recognized as the SSC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.

The award marks the first of Lawrence's career.

Lawrence didn't start the match, but he certainly provided the finishing touch having entered as a substitute in the 41st minute. With the Sharks trailing for the first time all season, Lawrence earned a foul call in the box in the 65th minute, leading to a Matty Cornish penalty kick conversion that drew the match even at 1-1. The Miramar, Fla. native would come up even bigger, though, in the game's final moments, settling a Cornish pass with one touch before turning and drilling a left-footed strike into the low, right corner of the goal for the eventual game-winner.

NSU is off to an unbeaten, 3-0-1 start to the season and up to No. 15 in the United Soccer Coaches national poll, the highest ranking for the program since 2007.

Lawrence and the Sharks open SSC play at home this Wednesday in a Top-25 showdown with No. 21 Lynn. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. For coverage of the action, visit the schedule page on NSUSharks.com, or follow the Sharks on Instagram and Twitter at @NSU_MSoccer.
