If presidential candidate Joe Biden wins in November, he has said he would consider locking down the entire country in order to prevent any further spread of COVID-19.
Biden told ABC’s David Muir that, “We’re going to do whatever it takes to save lives,” in a recent interview, according to reporting by Politico.
President Donald Trump has said that recent spikes in a few states during late summer would not lead to a new lockdown on the national level, according to Politico. He has even responded to Biden’s comments regarding the pandemic by alleging on Twitter that Biden “has no clue.”
Robert Palmiotto, an insurance agent in Fort Lauderdale and a member of Our Lady of Mercy Parish, talked with the Central Broward News about how the candidates’ perspectives on lockdowns will influence his vote.
As a Catholic, Palmiotto said that he feels his faith imposes a duty to vote on him, and a duty to vote in accordance with their beliefs.
“I think we should be pro-life and we should be pro-law-and-order,” he told the Central Broward News.
A part of living out those beliefs is living them out in how he votes, Palmiotto said.
“Bottom line is, we’ve got to vote for people that support our values,” he told the News.
With the impact it has on individual lives and livelihoods, even the economy is something Catholics should be concerned about and should demonstrate in how they vote, he said.
“We should be concerned about the economy,” he told the Central Broward News.
Even as someone who has not felt the financial pinch of coronavirus lockdowns personally, Palmiotto said that he could not support a candidate who would bring back the lockdowns the economy is just now struggling out from under.
