On January 28, the Broward County school board held a meeting proposing to merge select elementary and middle schools into a K-8 program to boost enrollment and better compete with charter schools in the area.
Among schools that would be affected if the decision goes through are Hollywood Central Elementary and Driftwood Elementary and Middle schools in Hollywood, the South Florida SunSentinel reported.
The changes could go into effect in the fall.
Hollywood Central Elementary would absorb roughly 300 middle school students to its current 400 student population. Driftwood Elementary and Driftwood Middle, two schools that sit right across from each other, would combine to form one K-8 campus.
The majority of positions held during the meeting were against the proposal going through.
“This is something that should not happen, and as a parent, I’m truly concerned about my son who is only a fourth grade student co-mingling with preteens," Gregory Baptiste, a parent in the Driftwood school district, was quoted in the SunSentinel as saying.
