The Florida Panthers will finish their season when they host the Detroit Red Wings at Amerant Bank Arena on April 15. Despite being the back-to-back Stanley Cup champions, injuries have hampered their efforts for a third consecutive title.
This matchup is significant as it marks the end of an injury-plagued year for the Panthers, who are approaching nearly 600 man games lost due to various setbacks. The team sees this difficult season as motivation for improvement next year.
Forward Matthew Tkachuk said, “Not the year that anybody wanted individually or collectively, but there’s a whole lot we can learn from this year. Definitely a down year for everybody. It sucks, but it’s going to have to motivate us to come back stronger next year.” Tkachuk returns to play after celebrating the birth of his first child and described it as “the greatest day of my life.”
While Tkachuk rejoins the lineup, Tomas Nosek is out with a broken leg and Gustav Forsling will miss time due to a back injury. Mikulas Hovorka has been recalled from the American Hockey League (AHL) to fill in on defense. Head coach Paul Maurice commented on the team’s adversity: “Outside of the real world, playing for the Panthers has been the most dangerous job in pro sports.”
Despite these challenges, players like Mackie Samoskevich and Cole Reinhardt have contributed key performances in recent games. Samoskevich said, “We’ve been playing well these last few games…ending on a good one for them [fans] is huge.” The Panthers have won eight of their last ten home games.
The Red Wings enter this game having struggled late in their own campaign and currently hold a ten-season playoff drought. In three previous meetings this season between these teams, Florida leads with two wins.
Looking ahead, Maurice addressed how they plan to use this experience: “The next guy goes down…you’re just scratching and clawing…As soon as that happens…How do we take this and turn it into something special for next year?” Tkachuk also added optimism about returning healthy: “We’re going to come back ready to roll next year…We’ve got a really, really good team.”
