The Florida Panthers lost their fourth consecutive game on Monday, falling 5-3 to the Buffalo Sabres at Amerant Bank Arena. Despite an early 2-0 lead and a significant advantage in scoring chances, the Panthers were unable to secure a win.
Head coach Paul Maurice commented on his team’s efforts amid ongoing challenges. “They’re playing together,” Maurice said. “The bench is good. They’re pulling for each other. They’re trying to do the right things. They’re battling as hard as they can. There’s nothing more I can ask of them.”
Rookie Sandis Vilmanis opened the scoring just 37 seconds into the first period, marking his second career goal. Vilmanis now has four points in his first 12 NHL games and continues to make an impression among his teammates and coaches.
“It’s world-class players out there,” Vilmanis said. “Just playing against them, just look how they’re playing, try to take advice from them. That’s the best feeling ever, that you’re here with them and you can learn a lot.”
Evan Rodrigues extended Florida’s lead later in the first period before Buffalo responded with goals from Tage Thompson and Peyton Krebs to tie the game by the end of the opening frame.
The Panthers’ injury situation worsened when Sam Bennett left during the first period with an upper-body injury and did not return. The team was already missing several key players due to injuries.
“We’ll get a better handle on it tomorrow,” Maurice said regarding Bennett’s status.
Buffalo took its first lead in the second period after a deflected pass led to Ryan McLeod’s goal. Uvis Balinskis tied it up for Florida late in the period on a power play opportunity.
With goals from both Vilmanis and Balinskis, this marked the first time two Latvian-born players scored for the same team in one NHL game.
Jason Zucker put Buffalo ahead again with a power-play goal early in the third period following a penalty call against Cole Schwindt. Josh Doan added another goal late in regulation to secure Buffalo’s victory.
Matthew Tkachuk reflected on what needs to change moving forward: “I think we’ve just got to get back to the basics,” he said. “We’ve got to try and win a 1-0 or 2-1 game here. Just try to go from there. We’re in one right now. If we don’t simplify it, this year is going to get away from us.”
Paul Maurice praised Vilmanis’ adaptability: “He’s not a single-style player where he has to play with a certain kind of player. He looks like he could play with some guys and be a good player. He’s a good one.”
Tkachuk also addressed recent struggles: “It’s not fatigue. We seem to be pressing in the third [period], but we’re always chasing… That’s mentally and emotionally draining. Guys have been through a crazy year with guys in and out.”
Vilmanis described building chemistry with teammate Cole Schwindt: “We are just trying to work as hard as possible, trying to make simple plays and just put it on the net… so we’re just trying to grow that chemistry and grow our game.”
Florida led significantly in shot attempts (81-49) but was unable to convert enough opportunities into goals.
The Panthers now hold a record of 28-24-3 as they prepare for their next matchup against the Boston Bruins at home on Wednesday before heading into an Olympic break.
