The Florida Panthers closed out their season with an 8-1 victory against the Detroit Red Wings at Amerant Bank Arena on April 16. Despite missing the playoffs, the team showcased strong performances from both veterans and recent call-ups.

This final game of the season held significance for several young players who made notable contributions. Vinnie Hinostroza opened scoring early in the first period, assisted by rookie Wilmer Skoog, who earned his first National Hockey League point. “It’s a surreal feeling just being here,” said Ludvig Jansson, another rookie defenseman who also notched his first career assist during the game.

Matthew Tkachuk emphasized the team’s determination to return to playoff contention next year. “We better just take advantage of this summer and come back with a complete snarl in us that we have to get back to playoffs,” Tkachuk said. He added, “We didn’t do it this year. We let each other down. Hopefully this is a one-off.” Luke Kunin scored twice, including a goal set up by childhood friend Tkachuk, marking what he described as a special moment for both players.

Rookie defenseman Mike Benning contributed two goals in quick succession during the second period and reflected on his achievement: “It was nice… It’s a cherry on top, for sure.” Goaltender Daniil Tarasov finished with 24 saves despite conceding one goal late in the second period.

The Panthers finished their campaign on a three-game winning streak and recorded several milestones: three rookies had multiple points in one game for the first time in franchise history; Mike Benning became their first rookie defenseman to score multiple goals in a single period; and A.J. Greer ended his season with a personal best of 17 goals.

Head coach Paul Maurice acknowledged fans’ support after what he called “a bit of a tough year” but insisted that effort remained high until the end: “There’s nothing on the line… Those guys came out and played their butts off.” As several prospects return to Charlotte for American Hockey League playoffs, attention now turns toward preparations for next season.
