The Florida Panthers defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-2 at Scotiabank Arena on April 12, ending their final road trip of the season with a decisive win. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the defending Stanley Cup champions.
Head coach Paul Maurice said, “That’s as good as we can play with the guys we have. We played our butts off. Really proud of them.”
Wilmer Skoog, called up from the American Hockey League just one day earlier, made his National Hockey League debut in this game. Skoog became the seventh player to debut for an injury-plagued Panthers squad this season and contributed two shots on goal and three blocked shots. “That was awesome,” said Skoog about his first NHL experience. “Just being around everyone and being a part of this, winning the game, it was awesome. Really fun.”
The Panthers took an early lead when Eetu Luostarinen scored just 23 seconds into the first period after collecting a rebound off the end boards and shooting past Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll. Cole Reinhardt extended Florida’s lead by scoring while being pulled down by a defender at 5:32 in the opening period.
Tomas Nosek added another goal early in the second period after returning from surgery that kept him out most of the year. “It’s been a roller coaster season and tough times sometimes,” Nosek said about his return to play and scoring before season’s end.
Marek Alscher recorded his first career point with an assist on Nosek’s goal during only his second NHL game; both players are natives of Czechia.
Toronto responded with two goals from William Nylander in quick succession during the second period but could not close further on Florida’s lead.
In third-period action, Mackie Samoskevich scored for Florida following an assist from A.J. Greer, while Tarasov stopped John Tavares on a breakaway to preserve momentum for Florida.
After Woll was pulled late in regulation for an extra attacker, Greer scored into an empty net before Nosek capped off his night with another empty-net goal.
Maurice praised several players’ performances: “Played big minutes,” he said about Luostarinen and Samoskevich after both recorded three points each (one goal and two assists).
Reflecting on team dynamics, Maurice also commented on Gustav Forsling: “Great mentor, great leader, but just a really great human being.”
Skoog described adjusting to NHL play: “I think the skill is obviously different. You kind of have to adjust your game to the opponents.”
Nosek spoke about rookies’ opportunities late in season: “It’s not easy to come here… But it’s big for them. They get a chance to play.”
Nosek concluded regarding team effort: “We played pretty good… I’m happy with two goals… It feels good.”
The Panthers will now return home for their final homestand beginning Monday against New York Rangers at 7 p.m., which will also serve as Fan Appreciation Night.
