In an effort to improve pedestrian and vehicular safety, the City Commission passed an ordinance that addresses individuals who obstruct public rights-of-way, including streets, sidewalks, driveways, and swale areas.
The ordinance specifically addresses those who unlawfully sit or stand in or on an unpaved median, occupy a travel lane while traffic is moving, alter or impede traffic flow, or jaywalk. Additionally, it is unlawful for an individual to physically touch another person or any part of an occupied vehicle without consent.
This marks a critical step taken by the Commission to cut down on the aggressive and often dangerous actions that occur on some of the City’s busy roadways and intersections. The ordinance goes into effect immediately, and the Fort Lauderdale Police Department will soon begin awareness and enforcement measures.
