Free, literacy-based events focus on families, children and books

Broward County Library (BCL) celebrates El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day), known simply as “Día,” from April 4 to April 29 with a series of free events focusing on children and literacy.

Select Broward County Library locations will host musical programs, theater shows, visiting authors, storytellers, crafting, book giveaways and more to commemorate the holiday, which originated in Mexico as a celebration of children, families and reading. All Día can be found the on the library events calendar by clicking on “Día: Children’s Day/Book Day.”

Recommended for families and parents/caregivers with children up to age 12, Día, or Children’s Day, is a celebration of childhood literacy in which children connect to stories, libraries and diverse books, languages and cultures.

It is celebrated in many countries around the world and became popularized in 1997 as a new holiday in the United States by children’s book author Pat Mora. Its creation emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

Events are sponsored by Broward County Library and various library Friends groups, as noted in the individual programs. For additional information, contact Kimberly White, Youth Services Coordinator, at kiwhite@broward.orgor 954-357-7470.
